Black Friday in a mall \u2014 and then shots are fired<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">On November 28 (local time), around 5 p.m., one of the largest malls in the Bay Area \u2014 <strong>Westfield Valley Fair<\/strong> \u2014 was packed with people out for Black Friday deals and dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">At the busiest, brightest, most \u201cit-should-be-safe\u201d moment,<br>an argument broke out inside the mall, and someone pulled out a gun and opened fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">From what\u2019s publicly known so far:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The shooting took place near the Macy\u2019s area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">A man got into a dispute with the gunman<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The gunman shot at him, and two nearby women (one of them a 16-year-old girl) were hit as well<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">All three were taken to hospital with <strong>non-life-threatening injuries<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Police are calling it a <strong>targeted dispute<\/strong>, not a random mass shooting \u2014 but the shooter is still at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Eyewitness videos and interviews are all describing the same scene:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSuddenly a huge crowd started sprinting toward us.<br>I heard a few gunshots, and then everyone rushed into the stores and pulled the gates down.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">No one is saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAt that moment, I calmly took out my phone and opened the SOS feature.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. When you\u2019re running for your life, your hands are busy keeping you alive \u2014 not opening an app<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We\u2019ve all seen these tutorials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">\u201cIn danger? Turn on your phone\u2019s SOS feature.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cPress the power button a few times to auto-dial 112 \/ 911.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cOpen this emergency app and tap the big red button.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">All of that looks very reasonable when you\u2019re sitting on your sofa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But if you look at the actual footage from this mall shooting, reality looks more like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Crowds suddenly sprinting from one end of the corridor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">People grabbing their kids or their partner\u2019s hand and just running<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Someone falling, scrambling back up, too scared to even look back<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Store staff shouting \u201cGet in! Get in!\u201d and then slamming the metal gate down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>What are your hands doing at that moment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">One hand is pulling someone you care about<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The other is bracing on door frames, grabbing railings, pushing open glass doors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Shopping bags, backpacks, coats all turn into dead weight \u2014 you just want to get into any space where you can hide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You are absolutely not in the mood, or have the bandwidth, to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Fish out your phone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Unlock it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Hunt for where the SOS feature is hidden in Settings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Double-check \u201cDid I press the right thing?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In that moment you have only one thought left:<br><strong>Get away from that direction.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. After you\u2019ve been shot, it\u2019s even less possible to complete any \u201coperation flow\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Go one step further. Imagine you\u2019re not just \u201cpresent at the scene\u201d, but you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Get hit by a stray bullet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Are knocked down and trampled<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Or tumble down stairs in the chaos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What you can do, shrinks instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In this mall incident, at least two of the three people who were shot were bystanders caught in the line of fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In that instant of being hit, it could look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">A bullet to the leg \u2014 you can barely move, and the pain makes it hard even to speak<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">A wound to the torso or arm \u2014 you can\u2019t even lift your hand properly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Heavy blood loss \u2014 your head spins, your vision darkens, your awareness drifts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Now go back and read those tutorial steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">\u201cOpen your phone and tap XX feature.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cEnter your unlock code.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cSelect your emergency contacts.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cTap confirm to send.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To be blunt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">That\u2019s just not going to happen.<br>In a real scene like this, those steps are nothing but <strong>armchair theory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. We like to believe \u201cif something happens, I\u2019ll press it\u201d \u2014 reality looks very different<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In our heads, we often picture a neat scenario:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf something really happens, I\u2019ll immediately grab my phone, press SOS, and wait for rescue.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But whether it\u2019s this Black Friday mall shooting,<br>or past nightclub shootings, train station attacks \u2014<br>the actual footage almost always looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Some people don\u2019t even see what happened; they just run with the crowd<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Some hide inside shops, behind counters, in restrooms, shaking with their heads down<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Some use their phones in brief quiet moments \u2014 <strong>to tell family they\u2019re safe<\/strong>, not to \u201cactivate some feature\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This isn\u2019t because you\u2019re cowardly, or unprepared.<br>It\u2019s because <strong>humans are wired this way \u2014 survival first, everything else later.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I\u2019ve had one very vivid experience myself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I was volunteering in Hualien, shoveling mud after floods,<br>and suddenly someone yelled, \u201cWater\u2019s coming, run!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Everyone just <strong>instinctively<\/strong> turned and sprinted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In that moment, nobody was thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">\u201cIs this the optimal direction?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cWhere is the safest route?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cShould I turn on some emergency function first?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Your brain is down to two words: <strong>just run.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. The real question isn\u2019t \u201chow to teach people to press\u201d, but \u201cwhat happens when they can\u2019t press at all?\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">So instead of making another hundred infographics about \u201chow to turn on SOS\u201d,<br>I think the more important question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">If in those truly dangerous seconds, a person <strong>cannot<\/strong> operate their phone at all,<br>what happens in the next few minutes or even hours?<br>Is there <em>anything<\/em> that will automatically say, \u201cSomething\u2019s wrong with me\u201d?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This has nothing to do with which brand, which platform, or which app you use.<br>The key is whether the system is built to <strong>kick in after the person is incapacitated<\/strong>,<br>not only when they are able to act manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It might look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Your daily routine and movement patterns look a certain way<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">One day you\u2019re in a large public space, and suddenly you stop moving for a long time, and your phone isn\u2019t being used at all<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The system isn\u2019t waiting for you to \u201cpress\u201d; instead it:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Detects the anomaly itself<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Sends your <strong>last known location<\/strong> plus \u201csomething might be wrong\u201d to trusted contacts you chose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">If the network was down at that moment, it sends that information once the connection is back<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This mechanism will not stop a bullet.<br>It can\u2019t guarantee that you\u2019ll make it home alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But what it <em>can<\/em> do is shorten that deadly window of time when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYour family has no idea you\u2019re in trouble,<br>and no idea where you were last seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">For many emergencies,<br>those few hours are exactly what separates life from death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. If you won\u2019t open SOS while running, and can\u2019t unlock your phone after you\u2019re shot \u2014 what <em>can<\/em> we do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can treat this mall shooting as just another U.S. news story.<br>Or you can treat it as a reminder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>First reminder:<\/strong><br>Stop assuming, \u201cIf something happens, I\u2019ll be able to press that button.\u201d<br>There\u2019s a very high chance you simply won\u2019t have the time or strength.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Second reminder:<\/strong><br>Think ahead, while things are normal: If something happens to me in a crowded place with limited exits,<br>who will know?<br>How will they know?<br>Will they be able to find me at all?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The point is <strong>not<\/strong> to make you live in constant fear.<br>It\u2019s to use calm days to prepare a bit more for <strong>that worst-case moment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Because when you\u2019re truly running for your life,<br>your hands will be pulling the people you love, pushing that door, grabbing that railing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">No one, in that exact second,<br>is going to open Settings and slowly search for where SOS is hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7.
