The intuitive benefits of location sharing (and what most people <em>only<\/em> see)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Let\u2019s be fair: location sharing <em>does<\/em> have its benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">When kids go to and from school, or family members go out, it can help you confirm roughly where they are.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">When a partner is late, you can check whether they\u2019re still near the office.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">When someone gets lost, a friend can look at the map and guide them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A lot of police and domestic violence support services also suggest <strong>temporary<\/strong> location sharing with a trusted person in specific high-risk situations. In those cases, it really can help save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But here\u2019s the problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">The way most people use location sharing<br>is completely different from those \u201chigh-risk scenarios\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Most of the time, it\u2019s wrapped in words like \u201cI care about you\u201d, \u201cbecause I worry about you\u201d, \u201cwe\u2019re close, right?\u201d,<br>but what it actually does is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>24\/7, full-coverage monitoring.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And in the real world, people most at risk are often those in <strong>intimate relationships with unequal power or violence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The real risk: location data is a very sharp knife<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">According to recent United Nations estimates,<br><strong>an average of 137 women are killed every day by a partner or family member.<\/strong><br>The World Health Organization reports that <strong>over 840 million women worldwide<\/strong> have experienced intimate partner violence or sexual violence at some point in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In that context, \u201cknowing where you are at all times\u201d is no longer just about reassurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.1 In unequal relationships, location becomes an \u201celectronic shackle\u201d<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Research from the Australian eSafety Commissioner shows that <strong>almost one in five young people<\/strong> think it\u2019s \u201creasonable\u201d to be able to track a partner\u2019s location at all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Many people don\u2019t see any problem with being tracked 24\/7.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">If you turn location sharing off, you risk being accused of<br>\u201cAre you cheating on me?\u201d or<br>\u201cWhat are you doing that you don\u2019t want me to see?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In a healthy and equal relationship, location sharing might just be \u201ca bit more convenient\u201d.<br>But as soon as one side has controlling or violent tendencies,<br><strong>location sharing immediately becomes a very useful weapon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In real-world domestic violence and intimate partner abuse cases, it\u2019s already very common to see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Tracking the victim\u2019s location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Installing monitoring or stalkerware apps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Forcing them to turn on location sharing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These tools are then used to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Check whether you <em>really<\/em> went to work or school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Watch whether you go to places you\u2019ve been \u201cforbidden\u201d to visit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Even find out the \u201csafe address\u201d or shelter you thought was hidden<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You think you\u2019re \u201cmaking them feel more at ease\u201d.<br>But in the wrong hands, you\u2019re actually <strong>handing over your entire movement history.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.2 It\u2019s not just \u201cbad people\u201d \u2013 system vulnerabilities can hurt you too<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As long as something is built on <strong>\u201ca cloud account + real-time location\u201d<\/strong>, these risks will always exist:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The platform itself gets hacked, or patches are delayed<br>(we\u2019ve already seen plenty of cases where apps leak sensitive data)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Your phone is stolen, or someone logs into your account, and they can immediately see your real-time location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Poorly designed new features accidentally expose your general activity area to strangers<br>(for example, some social apps\u2019 map features have already been flagged by prosecutors and child protection agencies as extremely risky for children and domestic violence survivors)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In other words, you\u2019re not just trusting <strong>\u201cwho you shared your location with\u201d<\/strong>,<br>you\u2019re also gambling on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWill this platform itself have a serious incident someday?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.3 Location sharing is often just \u201cthe <em>feeling<\/em> of safety\u201d<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">There\u2019s another point that doesn\u2019t get talked about enough:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">Seeing a dot on a map<br>does <strong>not<\/strong> automatically mean that person is safe right now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Common scenarios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The phone is left behind, but the person has been taken away<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The phone runs out of battery \/ crashes \/ loses signal \u2192 all you see is \u201cthe last known location\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">An incident has already happened, but on the map it just looks like someone has stopped moving, at a place that seems \u201cnormal\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Many families, when they talk about what happened afterwards, say something like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe thought that as long as we could see the map,<br>we\u2019d always be able to find them if something happened.<br>But when things really went wrong,<br>the phone gave us no usable signal at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I\u2019m not saying location sharing is useless.<br>What I want to point out is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">Most of the time it gives you <strong>comfort on the map<\/strong>,<br>but what truly matters is whether a person can <strong>automatically send out a distress signal when they\u2019re no longer able to help themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Why I refuse to build a \u201c24\/7 live map\u201d system<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s not that I <em>can\u2019t<\/em> build it.<br>It\u2019s that I believe I <strong>shouldn\u2019t.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.1 SafeGuard is built for \u201cthe time when you\u2019re already unable to act\u201d<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What I\u2019m building is <em>not<\/em> a tool that \u201clets someone else see where you are all the time\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I\u2019m focused on scenarios like these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">You faint or fall in the bathroom and your phone is outside the room<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">You\u2019re trapped in the driver\u2019s seat after a car crash and can\u2019t reach your phone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">You\u2019re taken somewhere you should never have been brought, and you don\u2019t have the freedom to pick up your phone and ask for help<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">You go out alone and, at the moment something happens, you\u2019ve already lost consciousness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In these situations, location sharing doesn\u2019t help,<br>because you <strong>no longer have the ability to operate your phone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">That\u2019s why SafeGuard\u2019s core idea is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen you lose the ability to ask for help yourself,<br>your phone should be able to detect something is wrong<br>and automatically send out an SOS on your behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSend your 24\/7 live location to someone or some server.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.2 Once I build a \u201c24-hour map\u201d, I can\u2019t stop it from being misused<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If I add a feature like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYour designated contact can open the app anytime and see where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">that means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Any slightly controlling partner can say:<br>\u201cIf you really care about me, leave location sharing on forever.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Any abuser who gets hold of your phone can force you to install, log in, and enable sharing,<br>and then use it as a <strong>perfectly legal stalkerware.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">From an engineering perspective,<br>this is literally just a matter of <strong>adding a few APIs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But for people living in unequal or abusive relationships,<br>it means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">I would be putting another weapon directly into an abuser\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Honestly, I can\u2019t accept that.<br>I don\u2019t want to wake up one day and realize that the app I built has become a tool that helps perpetrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In good hands, location sharing may look like \u201ccare\u201d.<br>But in the wrong hands, it\u2019s a <strong>nicely packaged, fully legal electronic shackle.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.3 I chose \u201con-device detection + event-based alerts\u201d, not long-term surveillance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">SafeGuard\u2019s design principles are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Detection logic runs <strong>on the device itself<\/strong> \u2013 raw data is not uploaded to a cloud server<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Only when something is truly judged as an <strong>abnormal event<\/strong>,<br>does the phone send your current location + a pre-written message to the contacts you chose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">There is <strong>no screen anywhere<\/strong> that lets someone \u201clog in \u2192 open a map \u2192 watch your live location whenever they want\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">What I want to achieve is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen you can\u2019t speak for yourself,<br>make sure the fact that <em>something happened<\/em> gets sent out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cRecord your entire movement history all the time,<br>and hand it to someone else to review.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Technically, these two approaches may look similar.<br>Ethically, they are <strong>completely different paths.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. So\u2026 should we stop using location sharing altogether?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">I\u2019m <strong>not<\/strong> saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cFrom today on, nobody in the world should ever use location sharing again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you choose to use it, I just hope you\u2019ll at least keep these things in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1 Put a time limit on it<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Only turn it on for specific situations<br>(for example, a particular hike, or a long solo journey)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Turn it off once the situation is over<br>Don\u2019t let \u201calways on\u201d become the default<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.2 Only share with a very small number of people \u2013 those you truly trust<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Don\u2019t hand it out casually.<br>Not everyone deserves 24-hour access to your location.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">When the relationship is unstable, power is unequal, or the other person has a bad temper,<br>location sharing can very easily turn into a control tool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.3 If you already feel this relationship might be dangerous<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Then you should be extremely careful with location sharing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Your priorities should be:<ul><li>Check whether there are suspicious apps installed on your phone<\/li><li>Check whether your accounts and passwords have been compromised<\/li><\/ul><strong>Not<\/strong>: \u201cHand over yet another stream of location data\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Which side does SafeGuard stand on?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">SafeGuard does exactly one thing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">When you are truly incapacitated and can\u2019t ask for help yourself,<br>your phone automatically sends<br>\u201csomething has happened + where you are\u201d<br>to the people you trust.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It does <strong>not<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Spy on where you are in daily life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Help anyone monitor you long-term<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Because I believe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">Real safety is <strong>\u201csomeone gets a signal in the critical moment\u201d<\/strong>,<br>not \u201cyou trade your freedom for constant surveillance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If you want to see how SafeGuard works in practice, you can find it here:<br><strong>SafeGuard on Google Play<\/strong><br><a>https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.origmo.safeapp&amp;hl=en<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many people assume that turning on location sharing automatically increases safety, but in reality location sharing safety is far more complex.
